NEC’s Final Lawmaker List Brings 1 Change

The National Election Committee has posted final results less than two weeks after the July election, paving the way for a transfer of power to Prime Minister Hun Sen’s son Hun Manet.

The NEC’s final election results were published on Saturday, August 5, just four days after the committee posted its temporary results on Tuesday. None of the vote counts have changed since the temporary results, which could have been contested during a 72-hour complaints window.

The NEC also posted a final list of 125 lawmaker candidates, who are expected to be sworn in on August 22 just ahead of Hun Manet’s ascendancy to the prime ministership.

According to the list, the number of women lawmakers has fallen from 26 in the sixth mandate to 16 this time, or from 21% to 13%.

The 125 lawmakers are 120 from the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and five from royalist Funcinpec, as preliminary results suggested. Compared to pre-election candidate lists, just one change has been made: Kampong Thom’s No. 4 CPP candidate Yim Leat, 36, has been removed, allowing No. 6 candidate Norng Veasna to get a seat.

Yim Leat, who is a son of Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly, has been made deputy governor of the National Bank instead.

The NEC’s list is sorted by birth date, putting the National Assembly’s president for the previous mandate, Heng Samrin, 89, at the top, and Funcinpec’s Nhoeun Raden, 37, at No. 125.

Funcinpec’s five elected lawmakers are relatively young, including the two most junior members in the National Assembly, Neang Channak, 39, and Nhoeun Raden, 37.

Even the oldest Funcinpec lawmaker, Norodom Chakravuth, 53, is the 100th oldest lawmaker out of 125 – that is, 99 CPP lawmakers are older than him.

None of Funcinpec’s lawmakers, however, are women.

Kamnotra has compiled a full list of elected lawmakers here, which is being updated with profiles and photos.
