Chea Serey will head the National Bank of Cambodia, according to government documents released over the weekend, replacing her father Chea Chantho, who will likely enter the National Assembly as a lawmaker.
A royal decree dated July 29 and published by government-aligned Fresh News on July 30 shows that Chea Serey was appointed the new governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, which is responsible for managing the country’s monetary policies.
Serey’s appointment comes months after she was made the deputy governor of the National Bank in March.
She succeeds her father, Chea Chanto, who contested the recent election and won on a Cambodian People’s Party ticket from Kampong Thom.
Yim Leat, the son of Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly, was also appointed as deputy general governor of the national bank, according to a separate royal decree dated July 29, 2023.
Leat would have also likely entered the National Assembly in a few weeks, after winning the July 23 election as a candidate from Kampong Thom. His father is also a winning candidate from Kampong Cham province.
Two other officials were also appointed to be deputy governors of the National Bank: Rath Sovannorak was the director general of banking supervision and Say Samath was the Cambodia Financial Intelligence Unit.
Samath is the daughter of Senate President Say Chhum, who is expected to lose his job after Hun Sen announced last week he would take over as the head of the upper house of parliament next year.
In a separate list of appointments, another royal decree from July 29 appointed four other officials at the National Bank to new positions. Ou Chandara will be the cash general of the reserve bank, Kimty Kormly the director general of the NBC, Kru Veasna was appointed as secretary general and Kith Sovannarith will be the new director general of banking supervision.
All four officials have positions equal to the level of a secretary of state.
