Prime Minister Hun Manet has been granted a “samdech” title in a royal decree signed by the king, joining several other ruling party elites and royal family members in receiving one of the country’s highest honors.
The decree, signed by King Norodom Sihamoni on September 2, follows a Royal Academy of Cambodia title granted to Hun Manet last month, “kitti tesaphibal pundit,” in another royal decree dated August 8.
The latest royal decree, dated September 2, gives Manet the title “samdech moha bovor thipadei.”
“Samdech” has been variously explained as meaning “the greatest” or “lord,” and has a connotation of merit and power. “Moha” and “bovor” mean great, while “thipadei” means leader.
Hun Manet’s father Hun Sen, as well as top CPP leaders such as former ministers Sar Kheng and Tea Banh, also have samdech titles.
Online, Hun Manet also uses the title of “Dr.”
Another royal decree on Saturday also granted a samdech title to Khuon Sodary, the new president of the National Assembly. Her full title is “samdech moha rotsapphea thika thipadei,” where “rotsapphea” refers to the National Assembly.
The titles come as a new government, led by Hun Manet, succeeds that of his father.
