Minor Party Members Get State Positions

Twelve politicians from minor political parties joined the government as advisers, according to the Royal Gazette

Nine of the 12 are from the Cambodia Nation Love Party, which was formed by former Cambodia National Rescue Party members in 2020. The party was left in a state of limbo after six senior leaders, who were on its permanent committee, resigned in 2022 and joined the government as advisers to the Ministry of Telecommunication and Posts, according to a gazette document from August 17.

Without a quorum, the one remaining permanent committee member was unable to call any meetings to reconstitute the party’s leadership leaving it in a suspended state.

A gazette entry that was signed a couple months later on October 17, 2022, and publicly released in May this year, shows that nine members of the party were also appointed as government advisers. They are Chiv Cata, Tan Tin, Kheuy Sinoeurn, Kong Kimhak, Kang Marady, Sok Sothea, Sok Vibol, An Pheara and Ken Kun.

Another entry from October 17 shows that three members of the Khmer United Party joined the government as advisers. They are Kem Rithisith, Khy Menglin and Ly Bunnara.

Rithisith is the brother of the late political critic Kem Ley, who was suspiciously murdered in 2016 over an alleged unpaid loan. Rithisith formed the Khmer United Party with former CNRP activist Kuch Ly, and originally wanted to name it the Kem Ley Party but was disallowed by the Interior Ministry.
